Local business owner Rogier Cuylits made a good living as a performing musician when he was younger. Now, as CEO of Allendale Fibertech, Rogier volunteers his time Wednesday evenings so that Emma’s House can offer free music lessons to local kids. It is hard to know who enjoys the lessons more, Rogier or the kids. “It gives me a way to restore my soul once a week and escape the pressures of the business,” Rogier said.
Laura McKenzie helped Lottie write an Arts Grant to get a small amount of funding to purchase some instruments. The piano was a gift to Emma’s house a few years ago. Rogier had the idea of offering free music lessons when he heard there was a piano at Emma’s house.
It has been well documented in numerous studies, that learning to play a musical instrument is beneficial to the development of children in many ways. Rogier. who is quite optimistic about the program, proclaims with pride that he will build a nationally recognized band comprised of Allendale kids.
